Can I leave my dog alone for 3 days?
Short answer: no. An adult dog shouldn’t be left alone for more than about 4 to 6 hours at a time, and a puppy much less. Leaving a dog alone for 2, 3 or 5 days – even with food and water – puts its health and wellbeing at risk. If you travel, your dog needs someone who lives with it, or a boarding place you trust.
Why you shouldn’t leave a dog alone for several days
- Food and water: a tipped-over bowl or a jammed feeder is enough for an emergency. An automatic feeder can’t tell if your dog is sick.
- Accidents and health: if your dog chokes, cuts itself or gets diarrhoea, nobody notices.
- Stress and anxiety: dogs are social animals. Many cry, bark, destroy things or stop eating when left alone – several days make it worse.
- Neighbours: days of barking and howling cause many complaints.
- Escapes: a distressed dog tries to get out, especially when there are fireworks or loud noises.
What about just one night?
Not ideal either. A healthy adult dog that is used to being alone may cope with a single night if someone visits, takes it out and refreshes its water. For a puppy, an older or sick dog, or a dog with separation anxiety: no.
How long can a dog be left alone at home?
- Puppies: only a very short time – they need to go out often and need company to learn.
- Adult dogs: around 4 to 6 hours, with a good walk beforehand.
- Older dogs or dogs with anxiety: less, depending on the dog.

Where can I leave my dog when I travel?
- A family member or friend who stays at your home: the best option if they know your dog and can be there.
- A pet sitter who visits: fine for a few hours, but it doesn’t replace company for several days.
- A dog boarding center: the safest option for trips of several days – if you choose well: no cages, real supervision, and someone on site at night.
