Dog Scared of Fireworks? What to Do Before, During and After

In Peru, fireworks are not just a New Year thing: Christmas, Fiestas Patrias (28–29 July), local patron saint festivals, birthdays and football matches bring them several times a year. If you have just moved to Lima, this can surprise you – and your dog. For many dogs, each of these nights is a real experience of fear.

Why are dogs afraid of fireworks?

Dogs hear much better than we do, and fireworks are loud, sudden and impossible to locate: your dog doesn’t know where the danger comes from or when it will end. It also smells the gunpowder and feels the vibrations. If it once experienced them with great fear, every new bang confirms that fear. It isn’t “being dramatic” or a lack of character – it’s a survival reaction.

Signs that your dog is afraid

• Trembling, panting without heat, drooling.
• Hiding, clinging to you, refusing to go out.
• Tail between the legs, ears back, whites of the eyes visible.
• Barking, howling, trying to escape, scratching doors or destroying things.

Before the date: 2 to 3 weeks of preparation

• Create a shelter: an inner corner away from windows, with its bed, a blanket over it like a “den”, and water. Let your dog use it freely beforehand.
• Get it used to the sound gradually: play firework recordings at a very low volume while it eats or plays, and only turn it up if it stays relaxed. If it gets restless, turn it down. This doesn’t work at the last minute.
• ID: a tag with your phone number and, if possible, a microchip. Many dogs run away in panic on these dates.
• Check fences and doors your dog could escape through.

On the night

• Walk your dog early, on a well-fitted leash, so it arrives tired and calm in the evening.
• Feed it a few hours before the fireworks start.
• Close windows and curtains and play music or steady background noise (fan, TV).
• Stay close and calm. You can stroke your dog if it comes to you – comforting does not “reward the fear”. What does pass on nerves is you being tense.
• Offer something to chew or lick (a toy filled with food) – chewing helps release tension.

What not to do

• Punish or scold your dog for being afraid.
• Take it to watch the fireworks “so it gets used to them”.
• Leave it alone, tied up or on the roof terrace.
• Give it sedatives or pills without a vet’s advice.

When does your dog need professional help?

If your dog panics, hurts itself, tries to escape at all costs, or the fear spreads to other noises (thunder, motorbikes, the street), it’s no longer a one-night problem. Generalised fear can be treated with a desensitisation plan and support. The worst thing for a fearful dog is spending that night alone. In our boarding in Cieneguilla, dogs sleep inside the house and are accompanied day and night – including on firework nights. Book early: places fill up on these dates, and we never exceed our capacity.
